Should Christian Women Wear Head Coverings?

Updated: Aug 20

To my beautiful sisters in Christ,

I was recently convicted about the topic of head coverings, and I wanted to share it with you. For those of you who don't know; I wear a head covering as suggested in 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. I’ve been covering off and on since 2015. Although I know many of you do not cover, I was led to begin covering by the Holy Spirit. I am saddened to say that throughout that time there have been many periods where I didn’t cover. Mostly due to forgetfulness, neglecting the practice due to hot temperatures, and ashamedly not finding a covering to match my outfit. I even went as far as to reason that because I wear "protective styles", technically my hair was covered 🤣. However, the Holy Spirit quickly convicted me, and I felt I was not correctly handling the word of truth. On my journey I have met amazing sisters from various spiritual backgrounds who also cover. They, along with the scriptures have inspired me to write this post.

One sister I met at MBI often covered with a beanie. Her style was very casual and comfy. Although her style was laid back in appearance, her zeal for her symbol of authority under Christ her bridegroom could not be matched. I learned from this sister that coverings can be versatile and practical. Another sister I met at MBI who also covered had a Mennonite background. She often adorned her head with a doily or head scarf over a signature bun, and matching ankle skirt. She was always fashionably modest, and someone who often inspired me toward imitation. What I learned from this sister was that coverings can be minimalistic, and quaint. The last sister I would like to recognize was also an MBI student; who from what I understand is a practicing Mennonite woman. Her attire was more traditional with a very traditional full head covering and matching ankle dress. Her modest appearance alone, partnered with her husband's mini sermon on why it's appropriate for women to wear a covering was convicting in and of itself.

I later felt compelled to confess my sin for lacking zeal in my conviction, and began to think of a way to submit to the Holy Spirit's correction. However, I was struggling to find a covering that would fit my usual attire and lifestyle. After a couple of days, the Holy Spirit led me to search wedding veils. To which, to my surprise, ended up being exactly what I had envisioned in my mind for the perfect covering. In the past I had actually attempted to make my own coverings, similar to the ones pictured below. However, after several failed attempts I gave up. However, Yahweh saw the desire of my heart and found the perfect solution for me, and I couldn't be more grateful. I am sharing my journey in hopes to encourage you in ways other sisters have encouraged me in my head covering journey. As well as provide study material, and a somewhat starter kit, to use should you feel led by the Holy Spirit to begin your head covering journey. The bible study is below along with the amazon link for the coverings I recently purchased. May the Lord bless you and lead you into all truth, wisdom and obedience in Jesus Name. Amen.

To Cover or Not To Cover. That is the Question.

1 Corinthians 11:3-5

  • But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head...

  1. Christ is the head of every man

  2. Man is the head of a Woman

  3. God is the head of Christ

Questions?

  • What does God's Word say about a man covering his head while praying or prophesying?

  • What does God's word say about a woman not covering her head while praying or prophesying?

1 Corinthians 11:6

  • For if a woman does not cover her head, have her also cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, have her cover her head.

  1. This matter was Cultural

1 Corinthians 11:7-13

  • For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but woman for the man’s sake. Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?

  1. Intrinsically Foundational

  2. Man is Glory of God

  3. Woman is Glory of Man (Even unmarried women)

  4. Woman 1st originated from man; not man from woman

  5. Woman was created for man, not man for woman

Genesis 2:18-23

  • Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

  1. God created woman from man

  2. God created woman for man

Note:

  • Because of the order and purpose of mankind's creation; it is proper for women in Gods Church to wear a covering during prayer, worship or prophesying. The Apostle Paul in his wisdom reasoned that a woman's covering is a suitable symbol of authority over the woman's head. He expressed that a covering properly reflects her submission toward the headship God has instituted. This practice is also suggested as pleasing to the angels.

  • It is not correct to suggest the Apostle Paul was ONLY referring to cultural context since his reasoning is based on God's institution of male headship. The order of creation is foundational in the story of mankind and applies to the first man until whenever God decides it should end.

  • Judge for yourself: You have the freedom to discern for yourself if you will adapt this custom for yourself among the Church of God.

Question?

  • Why should we consider and value what Paul the Apostle says?

  1. He’s an Apostle

  2. He was chosen by Jesus our King to bring the Gospel to the gentiles as well as teach us the mysteries of God

Question?

  • What are some qualifications of Paul that we should consider when discerning if we can trust his wisdom and council?

  1. (Philippians 3:4-7) Though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless.

  2. (2 Corinthians 11:21-27) To my shame I must say that we have been weak by comparison. But in whatever respect anyone else is bold—I speak in foolishness—I am just as bold myself. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they descendants of Abraham? So am I. Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure.
